Automatic Gate Safety on the Sunshine Coast
An automatic gate is a substantial piece of powered machinery installed exactly where people walk. A sliding gate can weigh several hundred kilograms and moves under motor power along a fixed line. A swing gate sweeps through an arc at head height for a small child.
Most of the time none of that matters, because the gate does what it always does. The safety hardware exists for the times when something is in the way.
If your gate is more than a few years old, it is worth knowing what protection it should have and whether that protection still works.
What can go wrong
There are three genuine hazards with an automated gate.
The first is crushing. A closing gate meets something solid, whether that is a vehicle, a person or a pet, and continues to apply force.
The second is entrapment. A sliding gate creates a shearing point where the gate passes the post or fence, and fingers and limbs can be caught there. This is the hazard most specific to sliding gates and the one owners think about least.
The third is the gate leaving its track or falling. A sliding gate that comes off its guides, or a swing gate whose hinges or posts have failed, is a large mass with nothing controlling it.
None of these is common. All of them are serious, and all of them are addressed by hardware that either exists on your gate or does not.
The safety features a gate should have
Photoelectric safety beams
A beam across the gate opening that detects an obstruction and stops or reverses the gate. This is the primary protection on most installations and the item most often found either missing on older gates or no longer working on gates that have one.
Beams need to be aligned to work. Vibration, a knock from a vehicle, and gradual settlement of a post all pull them out of alignment, and a misaligned beam either causes nuisance stops or quietly fails to protect anything.
Obstruction detection in the motor
Modern controllers monitor the force the motor is applying and stop or reverse when it rises unexpectedly. This is a genuine safety layer, but it is a secondary one, because by definition it acts after contact has been made. It is not a substitute for beams.
Force settings need to be correct. A controller wound up to push through a gate that has become stiff because the track is dirty or a hinge is dry has had its safety margin removed by whoever adjusted it.
Physical protection at pinch points
On sliding gates, guarding or mesh over the shearing zone where the gate passes the post. On gates with exposed gaps in the leaf, infill so limbs cannot pass through. These are simple, cheap and permanent, and they address the entrapment hazard that electronics do not.
Manual release
Every automated gate needs a way to be released and moved by hand, accessible without power, and known to the people who live there. This matters in a power failure and it matters in an emergency.
Battery backup
Not strictly a safety device, but on the Sunshine Coast, where storm season brings outages, a gate that cannot be opened during a blackout is a real problem. Battery backup keeps the gate operating and keeps the manual release as the fallback rather than the only option.
Testing yours
You can check most of this yourself in a few minutes.
Test the safety beams by starting the gate closing and passing an object through the beam path. A cardboard box or similar works, and there is no reason to use any part of yourself. The gate should stop or reverse immediately. If it does not, the beams are misaligned, faulty, or were never connected.
Test obstruction detection with care. With the gate closing, place a solid, soft object such as a rolled-up cardboard box in the path. The gate should stop or reverse on contact rather than continuing to push. If it keeps driving, the force setting is too high.
Check the manual release. Make sure you can find it, that you know how to operate it, and that it works. Everyone in the household should know this, not just whoever installed it.
Look at the pinch points on a sliding gate and ask whether a small hand could reach into them.
Watch the gate through a full cycle. Any hesitation, grinding, uneven travel, or the gate needing a run-up to get past a point tells you something mechanical is going on, and mechanical problems are what cause force settings to get wound up.
Do this every few months. It takes less time than reading this article.
Coastal conditions accelerate everything
Salt air corrodes hardware, and the components that matter for safety are not exempt. Beam housings, cable entries, hinge pins and track fixings all degrade faster near the coast, and the further weathering goes the more likely a mechanical problem becomes.
Sand and debris in a sliding gate track is the everyday version of this. A track that has not been cleared makes the gate work harder, which either triggers obstruction detection as a nuisance or, more often, results in someone increasing the force to stop the nuisance. That is how a safety system gets quietly disabled by ordinary maintenance neglect. Regular servicing keeps the gate moving freely, and a gate that moves freely does not tempt anyone to turn the force up.
Older gates and retrofitting
A lot of gates installed a decade or more ago were fitted to the expectations of the time and have never been reviewed since. Retrofitting safety beams, adding guarding at pinch points, fitting battery backup and having force settings properly set are all straightforward on most existing installations.

The short version
Your gate should have working safety beams, correctly set obstruction detection, guarding at pinch points, an accessible manual release everyone knows about, and ideally battery backup. Test it yourself a few times a year, and have it serviced so it keeps moving freely.
