Automating an existing gate — the honest test

Push it open by hand, slowly, through its whole travel. Does it bind, drag, catch or need a lift anywhere?

If so, that gate is not ready to be automated. A motor applies far more force than you do, thousands of times a year, without any of the judgement you apply when something feels wrong. It will find the binding point and destroy something — the gate, the post, or eventually itself.

What has to be sound before automation is worth spending money on:

- **Hinges, posts and wheels**, which carry the load. Posts adequate for occasional manual use often are not adequate once powered. - **A clear travel path** — a full arc for a swing gate, or a clear run of roughly the gate's own width for a sliding gate. - **Consistent ground clearance** along the whole travel. - **Sound metal.** Near the coast, we specifically check for **hinge posts rusted out from the inside** — a post that looks fine at eye level can be hollow at the base.

Sizing: the two numbers that matter

**Gate mass.** A common residential sliding operator is rated to **500 kg maximum** with a **17 kgf rated push force**. Larger industrial units handle 1,000 kg.

**Duty cycle**, which is the one people skip. Published specifications for a common operator: **150 operations per day maximum at a 50 per cent duty cycle**. The low-voltage version of the same unit drops to **55 operations per day at 20 per cent duty cycle** — which matters if you are going solar on a busy entrance.

A motor running near its ceiling every day generates heat it cannot shed, and the windings degrade. The failure is gradual: slower, then stopping mid-travel, then nothing.

Gate speed is worth asking about too. Published figures run **22 metres per minute at low resistance, dropping to 18 at rated force**. On a long gate that is the difference between waiting in your driveway and not.

Battery backup comes as standard

Most residential operators here are **12 or 24 volt DC** with an internal battery — mains charges it, the battery runs the motor. That architecture is exactly why they keep working through a blackout.

Published figures for one operator on a 7 Ah battery: **44 operations in half-day standby, 35 over a full day**, with the manufacturer noting that assumes a four metre gate and **excludes safety beams**, which draw standby current. Fit beams, as you should, and expect fewer.

Who may legally connect it

Under Queensland's *Electrical Safety Act 2002*, equipment operated above **extra low voltage** — above 50 volts AC or 120 volts ripple-free DC — is electrical equipment, and connecting supply wiring to it is electrical work requiring a licensed electrician working for a business with an **electrical contractor licence**.

Useful distinctions:

- **Plugging a gate supply into an existing outlet is not electrical work.** Installing a new outlet is. - **Mounting the motor is not electrical work.** Making the connection is. - A genuinely low-voltage motor on a plug-pack or solar sits outside that definition. A hardwired transformer does not.

You are entitled to a **Certificate of Testing and Compliance** stating the electrical contractor licence number after any mains work. Ask for it.

Warranty, and what it does not cover

Product warranties on common brands run **24 months**, with **batteries at six months** because they are consumables. One brand is 12 months overall.

The exclusions are what matter here: both major brands void cover for **lightning and power surges**, **corrosion of metal parts**, and **insect infestation**. One also excludes water and moisture damage and inadequate cable glanding or sealing of the control box.

Look at that list against a coastal Queensland summer. Salt, storms and ants are the three most likely killers, and none of them is covered — which is the argument for correct earthing, sealed enclosures, 316 fixings and a service schedule rather than for relying on the warranty.
